What are the rules regarding car/minibus hire?

I'm 21 and this summer I would like to hire a car to carry myself, 5 friends and luggage. A standard people carrier (ie. a Zafira) won't be big enough to carry us with luggage. However, I can't find any clear rules about anything larger. I know you need to pass a test for the minibus license, but I have seen that you can drive up to 9-seater vehicles without another test. Can anyone help me out?
Extra info, by the time of hiring I will have been driving 4 years without any incidents, as there might be some age restrictions... I honestly don't have a clue, the DirectGov website confused me more than helped me.

You will find this site easy to use.My husband is 29 and drives a minibus(we have a large family so a MPV is too small,so our minibus is for personal use)
My husband has a normal license but can drive a minibus as long as it isn't more than 3.5 ton(I think)
If you are driving outside UK you will need a different license as I know my husband can't drive our minibus in france etc...on his license which is a full one for a car with no penalties.
We have had great difficulty getting insured and only one company will insure my husband and that is for a minibus with nine seats and 1 drivers seat.
Basically when you phone around looking for one to hire each company will have their own policy on leasing/insuring you so one company might say no but another may say yes.
