Optimize Your Luggage

When traveling overseas, the worst thing to have to deal with is heavy, cumbersome luggage, carrying around too many extra pounds of articles you do not need. The seasoned traveler knows what to pack, how to pack it and how much room should be left in the suitcase when you're finished. Here's a few tips to make your next trip smooth sailing with easy to carry luggage.

Inventory.
First you determine how many days you will be away and how many nights you will spend at each city hotel. We all want to have some variety to our wardrobe, but by mix and matching a few key pieces, you can extend your fashions without loading your closet into the suitcase. Try two or three basic, neutral colors for the your pants and add only three to four top pieces for color. This cuts down on taking dresses or suits that add weight and bulk to your luggage. To be sure you have put everything you will need into the cases, start with a list of what you will need. As you pack each item, scratch it off the inventory list and you can rest assured that you left nothing important behind.

Carry-On Bags.
Your carry-on bag affords you some extra space, but be sure to not overload this bag as you may have to dig through it while en route. Items that are suited for carry-on include extra cash, personal effects such as cosmetics and cigarettes, and of course any medications you are traveling with. Never pack your medicines into checked luggage as there is a chance they will be lost or stolen, leaving you in dire straits when you arrive at your destination.

Space-saving Techniques.
When traveling in temperate climates, you will need lightweight clothing such as cotton. The traditional way to pack is to fold the clothing as you would do so when putting it into a drawer. However, to save space in your suitcase, try tightly rolling the item to double your packing room. For loose items such as socks, hair accessories and undergarments, place them into a clear plastic bag to keep them organized and at your fingertips when you unpack. In addition, you do not want to use up the last bit of space in your luggage when you leave. Remember that you may wish to buy souvenirs on your trip and will have to leave at least ten percent of usable space vacant in the suitcases to store them.

Dry Cleaning.
If you can avoid taking dry clean only items, you are already ahead with your overseas laundry bill. This type of garment can cost four times the cleaning bill for regular wash and wear items making plain cotton your best travel companion.

Carefree Luggage.
For the ardent traveler, one of the best investments you can make is to buy a luggage set with wheels. Some of the top brands have increased the rolling motion to spin in all directions, making the transport of the suitcase a piece of cake. Although there are carts for hire at an airport, assume you will not be able to get one and have to manually maneuver your bags.
