General Situation of Chinese Railway Transportation Industry in the First Half of 2009

www.shcri.com -In June of 2009, Chinese railway sector transported 115.19 million people, with an increase of 530,000 people YOY. Most of the passengers were medium-distance and long-distance direct passengers.

In the first half of 2009, Chinese railway sector transported 750.31 million people, with an increase of 5.1 % YOY. Among them, Chinese National Railway transported 742.12 million people, with an increase of 5.2% YOY. The non-holding joint railways transported 6.33 million people, with an increase of 2.6% YOY. The local railways transported 1.86 million people, with a decrease of 15.5% YOY.

In the first half of 2009, the passenger miles completed by Chinese railway sector were 309.437 billion passenger-kilometers, declining by 0.3% YOY. Among them, the passenger miles completed by Chinese National Railway were 388.381 billion passenger-kilometers, declining by 0.3% YOY; the passenger miles completed by the non-holding joint railways were 1.812 billion passenger-kilometers, with an increase of 1.7% YOY; the passenger miles completed by the local railways were 244 million passenger-kilometers, declining by 6.0% YOY.

As to cargo transportation, in June of 2009, Chinese railway sector transported 273.55 million tons of cargoes, basically the same as the last year. The average daily link relative ratio was increased by 100,000 tons, with an increase of 1.1%. Among them, the volume of luggage transportation was 1.19 million tons, with an increase of 2.1% YOY; the average daily link relative ratio was increased by 8.1%. The average daily number of wagon loadings was 144,791, basically the same as the last year; the average daily link relative ratio was increased by 2,149, with an increase of 1.5%.

In the first half of 2009, the average daily number of wagon loadings of Chinese railway sector was 140,407, with a decrease of 4.2% YOY.

In the first half of 2009, Chinese railway sector transported totally 1.59436 billion tons of freight, with a decrease of 4.0% YOY. Among them, Chinese National Railway finished 1.32223 billion tons of freight with a decrease of 4.5% YOY. The non-holding joint railways finished 154.97 million tons of freight, with an increase of 9.8% YOY. The local railways finished 117.17 million tons of freight, with a decrease of 13.1% YOY.

In the first half of 2009, Chinese railway sector transported 1.58835 billion tons of cargoes, with a decrease of 4.0% YOY. Among them, Chinese National Railway finished 1.31627 billion tons of cargoes, with a decrease of 4.5% YOY. The non-holding joint railways finished 154.92 million tons of cargoes, with an increase of 9.8% YOY. The local railways finished 117.17 million tons of cargoes, with a decrease of 13.1% YOY.

In the first half of 2009, Chinese railway sector transported 6.01 million tons of the luggage, with an decrease of 0.2% YOY. Among them, Chinese National Railway finished 5.96 million tons of the luggage, with a decrease of 0.5% YOY. The non-holding joint railways finished 47,400 tons of the luggage, with an increase of 49.1% YOY.

In the first half of 2009, the total rotation volume of freight transport completed by Chinese railway sector was 1.195247 trillion tonne-kilometers, with a decrease of 5.1% YOY. Among them, the rotation volume of freight transport completed by Chinese National Railway was 1.117444 trillion tonne-kilometers, with a decrease of 5.8% YOY. The rotation volume of freight transport completed by the non-holding joint railways was 71.699 billion tonne-kilometers, with an increase of 8.5% YOY. The rotation volume of freight transport completed by the local railways was 6.103 billion tonne-kilometers, with a decrease of 16.1% YOY.

In the first half of 2009, the cargo turnover volume completed by Chinese railway was 1,181857 trillion tonne-kilometers, with a decrease of 5.2%. Among them, the cargo turnover volume completed by Chinese National Railway was 1.104067 trillion tonne-kilometers, with a decrease of 5.9% YOY. The cargo turnover volume completed by the non-holding joint railways was 71.687 billion tonne-kilometers, with an increase of 8.5% YOY. The cargo turnover volume completed by the local railways was 6.103 billion tonne-kilometers, with a decrease of 16.1% YOY.

In the first half of 2009, the luggage turnover volume completed by Chinese railway was 13.390 billion tonne-kilometers, with an increase of 2.0% YOY. Among them, the luggage turnover volume completed by Chinese National Railway was 13.377 billion tonne-kilometers, with an increase of 2.0% YOY. The luggage turnover volume completed by the non-holding joint railways was 12 million tonne-kilometers, with an increase of 38.4% YOY.

In the first half of 2009, the total equivalent ton-kilometerage volume completed by Chinese railway was 1.585684 trillion tonne-kilometers, with a decrease of 4.0% YOY. Among them, the total equivalent ton-kilometerage volume completed by Chinese National Railway was 1.505825 trillion tonne-kilometers, with a decrease of 4.4% YOY. The equivalent ton-kilometerage volume completed by the non-holding joint railways was 73.511 billion tonne-kilometers, with an increase of 8.3% YOY. The equivalent ton-kilometerage volume completed by the local railways was 6.347 billion tonne-kilometers, with a decrease of 15.7% YOY.

In the first half of 2009, Chinese railway realized 231.96 billion RMB (33.86 billion USD) in the investment in the fixed assets, with an increase of 123.4% YOY.

As to the infrastructure construction investment, in the first half of 2009, Chinese railway infrastructure totally realized 201.456 billion RMB (29.41 billion USD) in the investment, with an increase of 155.1% YOY. In the whole country, 2,739.4 km of new lines and 2,435.9 km of complex lines were laid. 1,681.2 km of electrified railways were put into operation.

Moreover, 5.347 billion RMB (780,000,000 USD) was invested in replacing and renewing the national railways in China. Among the investment, 4.485 billion RMB was invested in replacing and renewing the transport equipments, with an increase of 2.1% YOY.

In the first half of 2009, Chinese railway investment was only completed 1/3 of the yearly plan. According to some insiders’ analyses, two main reasons result in today’s situation. The first is that some projects that have been constructed since the first half of 2009 have not been settled accounts. The second reason is that the severe weather that happened in some areas of China in the first half of 2009 has affected the railway construction objectively.
