Can you take a childs car booster seat on plane for them to sit on?

I have to take one for our holiday in America and I wondered if I coud just carry it on the plane and let her sit on rather than having to pack it in a case because it is light but bulky.

Would it count as your piece of hand luggage?

Airlines do not use booster seats, the use something called a CRS (Child Safety Device).

Many airlines offer half-price tickets so parents can be guaranteed that their child can travel in a CRS or device. Parents should call their airline to ask for a discount and/or ask what the airline's policy is for using empty seats.

Ask your airline if they can provide a CRS for your child. If so, you may not be permitted to bring your own CRS on board, and may need to check it as baggage. http://www.faa.gov/passengers/fly_children/crs/

If your airline does not offer CRS devices, ask them their policy on allowing you to bring your own. Some count it as a carry-on piece, some don't, so it's always best to call ahead and ask to get a positive answer.
