How good is the security at the airport when it comes to checking luggage?

Usually it's REALLY thorough.
However, I made it from Chicago to Washington DC to Munich, and back from Madrid to Brussels to Washington DC with one of those math compasses (you know, the ones with the pencil and the pointy end you use to draw circles) in my carry-on (it was my backpack). I didn't realize I had it in there until FINALLY someone saw something in the x-ray and got suspicious when I was going through security to go back to Chicago. When the guy found it in my back, he still let me keep it.
So I don't know what that tells you..
