What types of luggage can be checked?

I haven't traveled international since the rules enabling the transportation authority to rifle through suitcases deemed suspicious were implemented. Can I check suitcases where the only way to open it is through a numeric code (like with the combination locks) and not a master key? Or do I have to get suitcases that are secured only by TFA-approved locks? I've heard stories where suitcases arrived broken open and were kept closed with conspicuous use of duct tape.

You should definitely check into the TSA approved locks. They are really easy to use, just get them, put them on your bags and then you don't need to worry about the TSA ripping your luggage apart to get in there. There are several types of locks but if you go to your local Wal-Mart or Target, there will be locks and they will say "TSA approved" and on the underside of them, they will have an area where the TSA can use a special lock key to open them up.

Your regular luggage should be fine so don't worry about that. I have seen people showing up with the biggest suitcases and they are fine to go on the flights so you don't need to buy new ones. Just make sure you use the approved TSA locks. I had one of the security officials tell me that on one domestic flight, 75% of the pieces of luggage were ruined because people were trying to use unapproved locks.
