I'm Moving away, how to take everything at once?

There wasn't really a category for my question so I put it here: PLEASE ANSWER

Ok I'm done with college and I'm moving away. So I'm making a 17 hour trip to a new location from San Francisco.

I don't want to leave things here in storage and pay $50 a month until I get the $$$ to come pick it up (who knows when)

U-haul is charging me a Whooping $252 to rent their smallest (4' x 8') trailer. That's more $$ than I would need to make two Round trips to where I'm going and back. And a trailer that small is all I would need.

I really don't have anything big besides an art table, chair, small square table, and 2 luggage. Everything else is just small stuff (books, computers, supplies, etc)

Yet in my small ford focus ZX3 everything won't fit inside. What do you suggest?

I'm in the same situation, except I finished college and am now getting married AND moving 15 hours away, can only make 1 trip and my fusion is not nearly big enough for this although I am only taking (clothes, tv, picture frames, misc items, a cat and a rabbit and my fiance is driving with me).... so here are my options: (hope they help you)

OPT 1 - price effective but unlikely with space
space saver bag - put all clothes in to suck out air, minimize the space they take up so there is more space to put my tv and picture frames, the furkids will be inside the car with us
books and stuff you can ship to yourself. ie since we already have an address at our destination, he will ship 1 or 2 boxes to ourselves to save space in my car. (you can use ups, fedex, or greyhound)

OPT 2 - pricey but potential
get a good friend of yours to drive a 2nd vehicle. rent a car/truck/minivan pack it up just like you would your car and make the road trip, your friend can either stick around a few days as vacation or you can pay for his/her ticket back home (this option works for me since my fiance is going to the same place i am so no airfare to return said friend is required)

OPT 3 - car rack
you've seen vehicles pass by on the free way with luggage and other random crap on the roof... or for the sportier people... kayaks on the roof. get a car rack intalled (look to spend close to 200) strap your stuff to the top while the rest is inside and hope to hell you don't need to pass anything with a lower clearance than 10 ft.

OPT 4 - craigslist is your best friend
I have a tv stand, a bed, a dresser, blah blah blah that i am not able to take with me, so instead of spending 350+ on a uhual, i looked on craiglist for a used dresser i can buy when i get to my destination, go figure if i leave it behind or sell it before moving, i can replace it for 30 bucks when i get to my new home. also thrift stores have pretty decent stuff... you can get a sofa for about 70 bucks, a dinner table/chairs for uner 100 too. so sell what you have and simply replace it when you get to san frank. you can find near new stuff on craigslist, so its not like things are going to be banged up and useless...

What should i look for to strap/secure luggage/stuff to my SUV rack? (expedition)?

Where should I go to get something like this? Should I look for a tarp with bungees or a cargo net for the back of trucks and what not?

cargo nets are not the best,try buying some restraining straps available at most vehicle stores...
