How good is the security at the airport when it comes to checking luggage?

Usually it's REALLY thorough.
However, I made it from Chicago to Washington DC to Munich, and back from Madrid to Brussels to Washington DC with one of those math compasses (you know, the ones with the pencil and the pointy end you use to draw circles) in my carry-on (it was my backpack). I didn't realize I had it in there until FINALLY someone saw something in the x-ray and got suspicious when I was going through security to go back to Chicago. When the guy found it in my back, he still let me keep it.
So I don't know what that tells you..

what is in a luggage lock that would cause cancer?

I just bought a TSA-approved luggage lock at Target. When I opened it, I discovered a warning on the package that the lock contains a chemical known to cause cancer and birth defects. Wash hands after using.

What could be in a LOCK that is so dangerous that you can't touch it?

Sort of makes it seem unfit for use. Why would they sell that?

I'm guessing that it's on there because the lock is also sold in California, where they have legislated that anything that might remotely cause cancer or birth defects must be labeled.
I wouldn't worry about it.
Could be minute traces of lead, or something in the lubricant.

A question about the TSA airlines security?

Hi there
I am going to be going to California in July on the Alaska Airlines from Portland, Oregon. I have a hobby in fire alarms and got a few from ebay. I am planning to take my one very special fire alarm to California with me. I like this alarm a lot and I have friends and my sister, who are living in California and I want to show it to them. I have Apsergers Sydrome

The alarm that I have is a Simplex 4051 audible signal. It is permametly disconnected and it would never sound. I use it for display and other personal resasons.

On international flights, what are the regulations for luggage?Are there certain items I cannot take?

What is the maximum total pounds I can check in and are there things that are not allowed to be transported overseas? With my carryon, what am I allowed to take on?

As far as weight limits you have to check with your specific airline. Mine is allowing me 50 lbs each in 2 suitcases. I am paying $150 for an extra piece which they will let me take up to 70 lbs in it. You can pack sharps in your checked luggage but not in your carry on. Please do not put any liquids, lotions in your carryons. Just last week they threw out my one ounce liquids. No flamables.

How often do luggage get stolen on airplanes while in the care of the airline personel?

The exact loss rate of bags recovered I am not sure of, but it is rare that the baggage handlers themselves actually steal the bags. While there are some that are less than honest and pilfer items from the bags, stealing whole bags themselves is pretty rare while in the care of the airline transit.

Bags are most often stolen at the claim carousel by thieves that prey of travellers. This is especially true at carousels where there is not baggage stub ticket check. When the airport in San Diego quit paying for the ticket stub checkers, my airline saw their bag loss rate triple! People were stealing the luggage. After 3 months of skyrocketing baggage claims they paid to have personnel to check the claim stubs and the loss reports dropped dramatically.

I also remember an incident where delayed baggage was set up for delivery and the next day never made it to the destination. Turns out the airport cleaners had taken the bags staged for delivery out of the bag room at night, stole the contents and dumped the suitcases in a dumpster. When the empty suitcases were found it aroused suspicion and the terminal cameras were reviewed. There they saw the culprits putting the baggage into their trash tubs and wheeling them away.
