International Travel Tips For The Best Family Vacations - Part 3

Traveling in foreign countries can be a wonderful, uplifting experience that will never be forgotten, but there are also perils and difficulties that can arise on any trip, especially those that are outside your own country. In part 2 of this article series we discussed how to prevent sickness from local foods and water while away, how to carry cash with you safely and how to use credit cards while abroad and much more. Now here are even more international travel tips that can help you have the best family vacations while you are abroad:

* As with any plane trip you take, airlines can lose the luggage that is checked in as baggage on the flight. So to counteract that possibility, be sure to take all important papers that will be needed for the trip including visa, passports, medical and insurance documents, trip schedule, lodging information, driver's licenses and so forth in your carry-on luggage just in case. That way it never leaves you as you make the trip.

* It is also a good idea to include a few clothing items in your carry-on bags that can get you through a couple of days in case your luggage is lost.

* To cut down on the amount of luggage that you have to carry, consider shipping the larger, more bulky items instead so that you can retrieve them at your first lodging destination and nor risk having them lost or misplaced on the flight.

* It's always a good idea to have a small first-aid kit along with you on the trip that can be retrieved handily in the case of an emergency.

* White sneakers often brand you as a tourist in foreign countries, so try to use medium brown to black shoes that are also comfortable for the trip as they tend to blend in with almost any kind of foreign attire.

* Be sure that you know what the local taxes are that apply to any purchase made as they vary widely in foreign countries and can sometimes be more expensive than the item itself.

* Become familiar with all customs requirements regarding foods, plants and so on before you travel so you aren't denied entry for any item that you have purchased while on your trip.

All trips require some advance thought and preparation but vacations outside your own country call for even more diligent research beforehand. By using the international travel tips and suggestions made in this article series, you should be able to be better prepared and have the perfect family vacation.

New Ultra-compact Toyota Model for Europe

Some time in 2009, Toyota Motor Corporation will roll out a new and exciting model for the European market. Called the Toyota iQ, this new model "Achieves exceptional space efficiency and is perfectly tailored to the lifestyle needs and environmental concerns of Europe’s modern metropolitans", according to the Japanese automaker.

The Toyota iQ was recently unveiled earlier this month at the 2007 International Motor Show (Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung, IAA) in Frankfurt as a concept model. The iQ features an ultra compact body with efficient space for three adults and an extra seat for one child. Toyota called this as the flexible 3+1 seating system. In addition, the Toyota iQ concept was designed and created at ED2, the Japanese automaker's European design studio located in France.

According to Wahei Hirai, Manager of design activities for Toyota Motor Corporation, “The iQ concept is designed to reflect and enhance the lifestyle of its owners. In an urban environment, people want to express themselves through dynamic and on-the-edge design, but at the same time rational factors such as size, functionality and CO2 emissions cannot be ignored. Bringing these contradictory aims together in synergy was critical to the iQ concept, it’s a way of thinking we call the ‘J-factor’, a philosophy at the heart of all our activities.”

In addition, Toyota said the iQ concept embodies the company's Japanese design theme, which is the "vibrant clarity, forward-looking, intelligent and energetic, with clarity of purpose and function"

The Toyota iQ is dubbed as the "world’s smallest four-seat passenger concept car", according to the Japanese automaker. The iQ is shorter than the Toyota Aygo, but features the same dimensions as the Toyota Yaris in terms of width and height.

Toyota targets the everyday urban transportation of European people. The Toyota iQ not only offers a sleek and compact exterior appearance, but also a refined interior proving practicality and functionality for its occupants. Outside, the Toyota iQ comes with an ultra short overhangs and cab forward silhouette designs that creates a dynamic and aggressive look. The car also features 17-inch wheels and tires combination to complete the exterior packaging.

On the inside, this new ultra compact model can carry three adult passengers, and a luggage space that can be converted to a child passenger seat. The cockpit also comes with easy to read instruments and gauges for a pleasant driving feel. The instrument panel offers a simple geometric form with the centre console designed in a manta ray shape and chrome finished tail. Other interior features of the Toyota iQ include soft-touch door trims, pearlescent white paint finish, mock snakeskin steering wheel trim, purple accents in the seats, purple accents in the door trims, purple accents in the dashboard, ultra compact heating unit, single central dial display, panoramic glass sunroof, and three dimensional three in one speed, rpm and fuel level read-out mounted on the steering column. In addition, the audio and navigation controls of the Toyota iQ are integrated into the steering wheel, providing the driver with easy access on the controls.

Japan's Nikkei newspaper said that Toyota is targeting an annual production of 100,000 units of the Toyota iQ in Europe. Unfortunately, the report did not include the base manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of this model. Car lovers should watch out for this model and other Toyota and Lexus models (equipped with Lexus air filter) bound for Europe.

I have tried looking on the airlines' websites for packing lists, but I can't seem to find answers to specific

questions.... is it alright now to travel internationally with shampoo, lotion and perfume in my luggage!? I am glad you asked this I have been wondering myself and I guess you just lit a fire under my tush to find out. I will be traveling soon as well and will need to know myself. Here is what I found out. Much more at the website I will share with you... what a relief.

On Tuesday, September 26, TSA adjusted the ban on liquids, gels, and aerosols.

Air travelers may now carry liquids, gels and aerosols in their carry-on bag when going through security checkpoints.

With certain exceptions for prescription and over-the-counter medicines, baby formula and breast milk, and other essential liquids, gels, and aerosols, the following rules apply to all liquids, gels, and aerosols you want to carry through a security checkpoint.

1. All liquids, gels and aerosols must be in three-ounce or smaller containers. Larger containers that are half-full or toothpaste tubes rolled up are not allowed. Each container must be three ounces or smaller.
2. All liquids, gels and aerosols must be placed in a single, quart-size, zip-top, clear plastic bag. Gallon size bags or bags that are not zip-top such as fold-over sandwich bags are not allowed. Each traveler can use only one, quart-size, zip-top, clear plastic bag.
3. Each traveler must remove their quart-sized plastic, zip-top bag from their carry-on and place it in a bin or on the conveyor belt for X-ray screening. X-raying separately will allow TSA security officers to more easily examine the declared items.

Please keep in mind that these rules were developed after extensive research and understanding of current threats. They are intended to help air travelers bring essential toiletries and other liquids, gels and aerosols for short trips. If you need larger amounts of liquids, gels and aerosols such as toothpaste or shampoo, please place them in your luggage and check them with your airline.

To ensure the health and welfare of certain air travelers there are no limits on the amounts of the following liquids, gels and aerosols you may carry through a security checkpoint:

* Baby formula and breast milk if a baby or small child is traveling;
* All prescription and over-the-counter medications (liquids, gels, and aerosols) including KY jelly, eye drops, and saline solution for medical purposes;
* Liquids including water, juice, or liquid nutrition or gels for passengers with a disability or medical condition;
* Life-support and life-sustaining liquids such as bone marrow, blood products, and transplant organs;
* Items used to augment the body for medical or cosmetic reasons such as mastectomy products, prosthetic breasts, bras or shells containing gels, saline solution, or other liquids; and,
* Gels or frozen liquids needed to cool disability or medically related items used by persons with disabilities or medical conditions.

You are not limited in the amount or volume of these above items you may bring in your carry-on baggage. However, if these items are in containers larger than three ounces, please perform the following:

1. Separate these items from the liquids, gels, and aerosols in your quart-size and zip-top bag.
2. Declare you have the items to one of our Security Officers at the security checkpoint.
3. Present these items for additional inspection once reaching the X-ray. These items are subject to additional screening.

We have also taken steps to ensure the security of the boarding areas after you pass through our security checkpoints. Therefore, any liquid, gel or aerosol, such as coffee or soda, purchased in the secure area beyond the security checkpoint is allowed aboard your plane. Pack Some Fun Into Your European Backpacking Trip

If you are backpacking across Europe, it’s important to pack only the essentials. Even if you are a clotheshorse or fashion guru, it’s just not possible to lug around a ton of heavy bags while traveling on foot. As long as you keep the mundane stuff like clothes and shoes down to a minimum, you can make room for a few extras in your backpack that will make your vacation more enjoyable.

Here are our top picks for what to include in your backpack if you have room:

Lonely Planet Guide. These travel guides are the Bible for economy travelers. They can be chunky, but we just don’t have the heart to tear pages out of these books. They are well-written, interesting, and fun to read. You won’t want to miss a single page.

Global Positioning Device. This is such a cool electronic gadget when you’re doing a lot of walking from town to town. It’s also handy to have when you don’t want to lug around a bunch of different maps. You’ll find yourself relying on it more and more as you navigate around the globe.

Travel towels. If you’ll be staying in hostels while you backpack across various countries, you’ll appreciate having at least one travel towel. Although you can rent the towels available at hostels, they aren’t always appealing. Travel towels are also great if you are caught in an unexpected downpour or need to wash up in a public restroom. They dry quickly and fit into a tiny corner of your backpack.

Photos of friends and family. We know you won’t forget what your family looks like and we aren’t getting sentimental. Having a few snapshots with you is a great icebreaker when you’re traveling. Backpacking is the perfect opportunity to meet locals and strike up conversations. You’ll be amazed by how people warm up to you when you pull out a few pictures of your family and friends from “back home.”

Inflatable neck pillow. Trust us on this one, you’ll find yourself sleeping somewhere uncomfortable at least once while backpacking. It may be a metro station, a beach, or the back seat of a bus. When you’re curled-up tight and shoved into a corner, you’ll be thanking the stars you thought to bring an inflatable pillow so you sleep without getting a permanent crick in your neck.

Compass. It’s not just for camping. When you are lost in downtown London, trying to decipher a map and not sure which way you are facing, you can get your bearings by picking landmark and using your compass. Is Big Ben to the North or South of where you’re standing? That’s a good start for figuring out where you are.

Power bars and granola. The reason you’re walking across Europe with a backpack slung over your shoulder is to save money while you take in the sights. One of the biggest expenditures you’ll have is food, so stock your bag with power bars and granola. If you substitute one of these high-energy goodies for a meal each day, your savings could add up and you may be able to extend your trip.

Rain poncho. A lightweight vinyl or plastic rain poncho can fold into a tiny square and is amazingly versatile. Apart from the obvious protection from rain, you can also use your rain poncho as a tarp for picnic lunches, to wrap up wet items when you pack, and as a place to lay out clothing to dry overnight.

When you start packing, lay out everything that is essential first, and then add the items from this list that you’d like to take. See what fits and go from there. Pare things down until you get your bag to a manageable weight and you're ready to go. Remember – the less you take, the more you’ll enjoy the trip.

Luggage And Your Children On Holiday

Going on holiday is a big enough challenge as it is, with all the preparation and planning that is required. It can almost seem like a military operation. As anyone who has ever experienced an airline will know that there are particular challenges facing the tourist who decides to take any kind of luggage onto an airplane.

However, the challenges and trials of the average holiday experience pale into insignificance compared to the challenge of taking children as well.

Quite apart from any interesting behaviour challenges the children might present, there is also the issue of their own luggage. Three particular problems present themselves. The first is the anxious parent who wishes to make sure that their children will be prepared for any eventuality. Some parents seem to take with them almost everything short of a personalized lifejacket and a lifeboat. Clearly, children will require their own particular items, but as a general rule, the same sensible rules that apply to your own packing will apply equally well to your children's. So, thinking about flexibility and versatility, and thinking about the type of materials that you use, will work just as well to reduce the number and volume of items that you pack for your children as they do for yourself.

The second issue regarding children and their luggage is whether to pack it with yours, or to pack it separately in their own case. Clearly airline restrictions might play a part in this decision, but equally it is worth bearing in mind that whilst children may be excited about the idea of having their own little suitcase, there can be downsides to this.

Increasingly it is popular to have children's suitcases designed in a way which does appeal to them. This includes a wide variety of cheerful colors and patterns, and often adorned with popular cartoon characters. One thing to watch out for, however, is the quality of these cases.

Regardless of the branded name that these cases carry with them, often it can be the case that quality has been compromised, and that the martial and locks could easily be damaged or broken. So, when choosing such luggage, make sure that things such as wheels, handles and locks are built to the same level of security and durability that your own case is.

Another eventuality to consider is that whilst your children may be enthusiastic about carrying their own case to begin with, this can become a short lived enthusiasm, and it is worth bearing in mind that it could very well end up being you that carries their case, and if the children are particularly young, you may find yourself carrying your case, their case, and the children. It would be at this point that you would find yourself scratching your head and wondering why you bothered at all.

The third thing to consider as far as children and their luggage is concerned is that often children need entertaining, and they need access to certain items such as books, computer games, puzzles and so forth. Generally, making sure that there is room in either your carryon bag or theirs for these items will be a life saver, especially if held up or on long flights.
